ALCUE-Net: Latin America, Caribbean and European Union Network on Research and Innovation (FP7-INCO: 2012 – 2017)

The ALCUE Net project aims at establishing a bi-regional EU-LAC platform bringing together actors involved in Research and Innovation (R&I) orientation, funding and implementation, as well as other relevant stakeholders from the public and private sector and the civil society, in an effort to support the international Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) dimension of the Europe 2020 Strategy and Innovation Union Flagship Initiative. The project partially continues the work of the three finished or ending INCO-Nets EULARINET, EUCARINET and ENLACE but is much more aligned with the EU-CELAC SOM JIRI and its working groups. It supports the EU-CELAC process and serves as a central facility for aligning the different actions. The project is coordinated by the Argentina Ministry for Science, Technology and Productive Innovation.

  • ERANET-LAC: Network of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean Countries on Joint Innovation and Research Activities (FP7-INCO: 2013 – 2017)
    ERANet-LAC is a Network of the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on Joint Innovation and Research Activities funded by the European Commission. The project aims at strengthening the bi-regional partnership in Science, Technology and Innovation by planning and implementing concrete joint activities and by creating a sustainable framework for future bi-regional joint activities. The project is coordinated by DLR in Germany and combines in the partnership eight Latin American and Caribbean and nine European funding agencies.Two bi-regional research funding calls have been implemented through ERANet-LAC. Academy of Finland is the Finnish partner in the consortium.

  • B.BICE+: Promoting research and innovation between Europe and Brazil (Previously B_BICE, BB.BICE. FP6-INCO: 2005- 2007; FP7-INCO: 2008 – 2011 & 2012 - 2015)
    B.BICE+ is an International Cooperation (INCO) project funded by the European Commission whose aim is to enhance bilateral cooperation and to support political dialogue in Science, Technology and Innovation among the European Commission, EU Member States, Associated Countries and Brazil.

  • T-AP: TRANS-ATLANTIC PLATFORM (FP7-SSH: 2013 – 2016)
    The TRANS-ATLANTIC PLATFORM on social sciences and humanities enhances the ability of funders, research organizations and researchers to engage in transnational dialogue and collaboration. It identifies common challenges and promotes a culture of digital scholarship in social science and humanities research. Academy of Finland is a partner, alongside several funding agencies from Europe, South America and North America.

  • EU-LAC Health: Linking European and Latin American-Caribbean policy making institutions in the field of health research (FP7-HEALTH, 2011 – 2016)
    The EU-LAC HEALTH project’s aim has been to define a detailed plan to guide policy makers and other stakeholders on future actions to support cooperative health research between EU and LAC region, taking into account the new political framework for EU-LAC collaboration in S&T. The main objectives have been to explore how to coordinate health research between EU and LAC, define a consensus roadmap, promote the creation of coordinating body and disseminate results.

  • ECOADAPT: Ecosystem-based strategies and innovations in water governance networks for adaptation to climate change in Latin American Landscapes (FP7-ENVIRONMENT, 2012 – 2016)- EcoAdapt is an action-research initiative working with three Latin American provinces to influence water management processes that contribute to local development and reduce vulnerability of human populations to climate change through capacity building, knowledge sharing, conflict prevention and mitigation, and promoting joint work with local and national stakeholders.

  • ENSOCIO-LA: Strategic Sustainable R&I Cooperation (Climate Action, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials) (FP7-ENVIRONMENT, 2013 – 2015)
    INCO-NET project ENSOCIO-LA is a coordination and support action that aims at establishing sustainable and integrated research and innovation cooperation between the EU and Latin America in the field of climate change, resource efficiency and raw materials. The project’s objectives include facilitation of knowledge dissemination and effective exploitation of research results between different groups in these areas.

  • STAGE-STE: Scientific and Technological Alliance for Guaranteeing the European Excellence in Concentrating Solar Thermal Energy (FP7-ENERGY: 2014 – 2018)
    Concentrating Solar Thermal Energy encompasses Solar Thermal Electricity (STE, also called CSP) and other associated processes, applications and technologies (such as Solar Thermochemical Fuels -STF-, Solar Process Heat, Solar Assisted and Hybrid Desalination, etc) that are called to play a major role for the achievement of energy sustainability in our modern societies. The European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) is the basic starting point of the STAGE-STE IRP; it was launched in 2008 and a Joint Programme on Concentrated Solar Power (EERA JP-CSP) has been formally approved in April 2011. Brazil, Mexico, Chile are members of this alliance.

  • CLIM-AMAZON: Joint Brazilian-European research facility for climate and geodynamic research on the Amazon River basin sediments (FP7-INCO: 2011 – 2015)- TheCLIM-AMAZON project is a joint Brazilian-European scientific initiative supported by the EU through FP7. This co-operation aims at fostering exchanges between Brazilian and European scientists in the area of geosciences and environmental studies, by means of scientific meetings, visits of experienced European researchers in Brazil, PhD and Post Doc calls open to European universities proposing to develop new research approaches in the Amazon region, a world-class example for climate research.

  • CONECTA 2020: Cooperation and Networking between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean to Coordinate Research Opportunities around ICT and Horizon 2020 challenges via Technology Platforms (FP7-ICT, 2014 – 2016)

  • LEADERSHIP: Latin America-Europe ICT Research & Innovation partnership (FP6-NMP: 2006-2007; FP7-ICT: 2013 – 2015)
    LEADERSHIPis a project funded by the FP7’s ICT Programme. The project aims at setting up a new approach to engage more actively and strategically in supporting dialogues and partnership building between Europe and Latin America, ultimately fostering EU-LAC cooperation in ICT research and innovation under Horizon 2020.

  • EUBrazilCC – EU Brazil Cloud Computing for Science (FP7-ICT: 2013 – 2016)
    EUBrazil Cloud Connect is a project funded under the second EU-Brazil coordinated call under the topic a) Cloud computing for Science. Its aim is to create an intercontinental federated eInfrastructure for scientific usage. This e-Infrastructure will join resources from different frameworks, like private clouds, supercomputing and opportunistic desktop resources to offer the community high level scientific gateways and programming models.

  • T-FORCES: Tropical forests in the changing earth system (FP7-IDEAS-ERC: 2012 – 2017)
    "Tropical Forests in the Changing Earth System” is a new European Research Council project. This 5-yr interdisciplinary research project aims to construct a Pan-Tropical Observatory of Forest Function, to explore forest response to global change. In Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America, T-FORCES is developing long-term on-the-ground observations of forest dynamics, integrating them with complementary approaches including high frequency measurement of the climate-sensitivities of different components of the carbon cycle. The project works with partners across the tropical nations, toward the shared scientific goals of documenting the key patterns, impacts and processes of change so far, and of understanding better the threat to forests from global change.

  • BIOASSORT: Improvement of technologies and tools, e.g. biosystems and biocatalysts, for waste conversion to develop an assortment of high added value eco-friendly and cost-effective bio-products (FP7-PEOPLE: 2012 – 2016)
    The overall aim of this program is to improve technologies and biological tools for conversion of wastes that are abundantly discharged in EU, by eco-friendly and eco-efficient production of high added values bioproducts such as ligno-cellulolytic enzymes, fuel ethanol (EtOH), polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). One of the main objectives is enlarging the patrimony of microbes for waste valorisation by (i) screening the assortment of thousand microbes belonging to the collections of Brazilian and Indian partners to select the microbes most efficient in producing enzymes, EtOH, LA, PHAs (ii) discovering novel strains with high potential of production of these products exploring the biodiversity of micro flora from India and Brazil and (iii) exchanging technologies and tools developed by different EU and ICPC partners for genetic engineering of different microbes (BIOASSORT, 2017).

  • Equity-LA II (FP7-HEALTH: 2009 – 2013/Equity-LA; 2013 – 2018)
    Equity-LA is a research project whose objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of different care integration strategies in improving coordination and quality of care in Integrated Health Care Networks (IHN) in Latin America. Equity-LA II builds upon the results of Equity-LA, which explored access to the care continuum and care coordination in IHN in Colombia and Brazil. Equity-LA II incorporates four additional countries with different types of health care systems: Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay.
