Course summary

The ICT for Development (ICT4D) course aims to build awareness on development challenges and the role of appropriate information and communication technologies in fostering inclusive and sustainable socio-economic progress. Introducing the field of Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D), the course examines the role of digital technologies in various development contexts and explores how ICT can contribute to social, economic, and sustainable development. It discusses the opportunities, challenges, and limitations associated with the use of ICT in development initiatives and encourages students to critically reflect on the impact of technology in different societal contexts addressing the issues of digital divide..

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a general understanding of the field of ICT4D.
  • Identify key concepts, themes, and issues related to ICT4D.
  • Critically analyse the opportunities, challenges, and impacts of ICT for development.
  • Acquire forward-looking knowledge on emerging technologies and leverage frontier technologies for development impact.

Learning methods

Students engage with online learning materials and complete a variety of learning activities individually, in pairs, or in small groups.

Completion methods

Following the course instructions and recorded video sessions, students complete and submit learning activities throughout the course.

Study material

The course materials will be provided by the teachers, and will also include selected scientific publications and research literature related to ICT4D.

Assessment criteria

Assessment is based on the submitted learning activities completed during the course. Grading scale is 0-5.

Other information

The course is designed for Master's students and PhD researchers, however, Bachelor-level students may also register and take the course.
